Raw Cappuccino Shake | The Full Helping

Back in May, I wrote about NuZest USA protein powder. It’s a pea protein, available either in a neutral flavor or in subtle varieties of plain, vanilla, cappuccino or chocolate. It’s nut free, soy free, gluten free, vegan, non-GMO, and rich in complete protein (more info here).

I sample a lot of vegan proteins. Some of them I love, and some of them just don’t hit the mark. Typically my deal-breaker is an excess of stevia; I don’t love the flavor and don’t tolerate it well, so I’m mindful of vegan proteins that are too heavy in the stuff. While I wish that more vegan proteins were sweetened with moderate amounts of date sugar, coconut sugar, or other natural sugars, rather than artificial ones, I must confess that the sweetener NuZest uses–thaumatin, harvested from the katemfe fruit (native to West Africa)–is much more palatable to me than is stevia. And I really do like the flavors, as well as the texture (not too chalky).

Since I first sampled NuZest a few months ago, I’ve been using the company’s protein powder often in shakes and smoothies. I still enjoy brown rice and hemp protein, and I think that getting a variety of protein is wise overall, but it’s nice to have NuZest as a go-to option these days. Last week, I finally sampled the one flavor I hadn’t tried yet, cappuccino. It is, not surprisingly, my favorite, because there’s practically nothing coffee flavored that I don’t like.

In honor of this new treat, and because I haven’t posted a smoothie in a while, I thought I’d share the smoothie/shake that made me fall in love with this NuZest flavor, a creamy blend of bananas, cashews, NuZest protein, espresso, and almond milk.

  1. This is awesome! I want to love so many vegan proteins but the stevia in most of them is not something I can deal with. In fact, I have two full tubs of Vega going to waste in my pantry. :/ Very excited to hear about an alternative, thanks for the introduction!! Love the branding, too!

    • Glad you like it! I am very sensitive to stevia and don’t have any trouble with this brand. Fingers crossed you have the same experience!

  2. This smoothie looks delicious, I’m glad that the reviews for Nuzest are great on the after taste….that’s a big downfall for me, so many I’ve had taste fake/chemically after.

  3. My mouth is watering. I LOVE smoothies, and I can’t wait to try mixing that nuzest with cappucino…. my two loves in this world. Wasn’t sure how to phrase this appropriately but I need to ask, if you have IBS, or something similar, and things like coffee tend to go right through you… is this gentle on the belly after drinking it?

    • Samantha, my IBS is well managed enough at this point that my system can handle coffee 🙂 But if you can’t, you could omit the coffee in this recipe or use decaf espresso 😉

  4. i was able to sample nuzest in may, and while i didnt love it as a quick shake (soymilk to go), i LOVED it mixed with yogurt! im sure itd be great with any soy, coconut or almond yogurt too!

  5. Got a sample of NuZest from your original post loved it, ordered both vanilla and chocolate which I’ve been enjoying very much. I usually just put one scoop as a protein boost into smoothies. Hope this product gets into stores, but if not I’d still mail-order it. My only complaint is that the lid on the container is larger than I can grasp with one hand so it’s tricky to open!

  6. I just recently tried a sample of this and it is the best tasting protein powder that I have tried. I would be so grateful to have one tub much less two. Thank you.

  7. My brother loves to have protein shake after all his workouts . I am gonna buy it for him . Thanks for sharing !

    • Genevieve – if you sign up on their website for their emails, they will send you a free sample, too. I haven’t seen it in any stores or retailers yet. 🙂

  8. Gena- just wanted to say thank you for this awesome recommendation! I got the sample from signing up through your original post on them and really liked it. It’s the first protein powder I’ve found to be palatable and totally worth the cost. I shared with my girlfriend and she loves it too, so we’re now on our second tub.

I really appreciate that your recommendations are always so thorough, well researched and authentic. And, congrats on your big move and your huge book launch success. I LOVE it and have been sharing with all my friends. Even on your less personally thrilling days (previous post on BBDs – I totally feel you) you are still rocking this life more than most people ever will. Keep it up!

  9. Is the “2 teaspoons ground espresso” in the recipe like ground espresso beans…??? Or cooled already brewed espresso- or instant espresso..?

    • I threw ground espresso beans in the blender, but instant would do nicely, too! If you did cooled, brewed espresso, I’d suggest a whole shot.

  10. I really enjoyed the sample of NuZest I got when you first talked to them, but I haven’t been able to buy a tub yet. So I definitely entered the giveaway! Hopefully some way or another I’ll be able to try this shake out, because it sounds delicious.
