The ABC’s of Me

While all of my friends frolick at the third annual #HLS, and I recoop from the summer at my Mom’s, I’ve gotten distracted by the ABC’s of me, a game that flew through the blogosphere a long time ago, but I only became aware of recently (through VeggieGirl!). We all love random trivia about bloggers’ personal lives, and so I’m answering the original survey, then answering the raw foodist’s version that my friend Aimee recently showed me. Enjoy!

The ABC’s of Me:

A. Age: Too old to be a premed. Kidding. I’m 29.

B. Bed size: Full.

C. Chore you dislike: Cleaning my bathroom floor.

D. Dogs: None.

E. Essential start to your day: Have you met me? Coffee.

F. Favorite colors: Blue.

G. Gold or silver: Gold. There are two small pendants I can’t live without.

H. Height: 5’4’’

I. Instruments you play(ed): Violin, once upon a time.

J. Job title: Food blogger, clinical nutritionist, and post-baccalaureate student.

K. Kids: One day. Maybe.

L. Live: DC.

M. Mom’s name: Rallou. Hopa!

N. Nicknames: Gen, Little Gena, Schmena, Bunny, Hammy.

O. Overnight hospital stays: One, for IBS related cramping.

P. Pet peeves: Long waits for the ladies room.

R. Righty or lefty: Righty.

S. Siblings: None, alas.

T. Time you wake up: 6:30 am.

U. Underwear: Anything comfortable.

V. Vegetables you don’t like: Raw red onion. Radishes.

W. What makes you run late: Underestimating transit time.

X. X-rays you’ve had: Thyroid, pituitary, numerous DEXA scans.

Y. Yummy food you make: I’d like to think that lots of it is! But I really love my guac, my sesame miso kale salad, my sweet potato hummus, my vegan enchiladas, my chia power pudding, and my zucchini alfredo.

Z. Zoo animal you like: I don’t like zoos. And here’s the raw foodie’s version, which was even more fun:

A) Preferred way to eat avocados: My favorite guacaomole.

B) Daily banana intake:  1, in chia pudding or a smoothie.

C) Cacao or carob? Cacao wins, but I love carob, too.

D) Durian? The horror.

E) Essential to start the day: Again I say, coffee.

F) Favorite fruit: Bananas and apples.

G) Guru you like: I don’t do Gurus. But I adore and admire my friends Brendan Brazier and Kris Carr.

H) Healthy meal: Massaged kale salad.

I) Ice cream base: Banana!

J) Juice or smoothies? Both!

K) Favorite way to eat kale: Salad!

L) # of Lemons in your house right now: A bag from Trader Joe’s.

M) Muscle testing: hoax or real? My vote’s on hoax.

N) Nut butter: favorite kind? Almond butter. But sunflower seed butter is growing on me.

O) Organic or conventional? As much organic as the weekly budget allows me.

P) Pickled veggies: have you made them? Yep. Some ho-hum Kraut.

Q) Questions you get asked about your diet: So Where do you get your protein? What can you eat?

R) Recipe you love: Everything in every cookbook I own? I wax hyperbolic, but I really do love so many recipes. Rather than highlighting something from a professional chef or cookbook writer, I’ll say that I absolutely adore my friend Diana’s Tohini Soup. And my friend Kristen’s pulp and flax crackers.

S) Skin brushing? Absolutely fantastic, but I almost never remember or have time.

T) Type of water you drink: Tap.

U) Unbelievable thing that’s related to eating raw: The fact that I live an essentially IBS-free life.

V) Vegetable you love: Kale. Duh.

W) Why did you start eating raw? To have better digestion and more energy.

X) X-rated vegetable or fruit: Bananas.

Y) Yummy food you make: Again: I’d like to think that lots of it is! But I really love my guac, my sesame miso kale salad, my sweet potato hummus, my vegan enchiladas, my chia power pudding, and my zucchini alfredo.

Z) Favorite use of zucchinis: Zucchini marinara or alfredo.

So? Did you learn anything you didn’t know?

  1. I just posted the ABC’s of me.
I found your blog through FrugalBabe.
    Looking forward to following.

  2. HI Gena! I am new to blogging so I took the opportunity to do the ABC on my website today. I am a fellow Columbian and will be visiting NYC in mid September. Any chance you will be around? It would be great to meet up since I read your blog religiously:)

  3. I am sooo behind the curve on this! I’m going to do it! I’m not raw but I’ve dabbled (mostly when I had a cervical cancer scare), so I think I’ll do the regular version.
PS I moved to Singapore for two years, I’m still here (end of my second year) and I had never heard of a durian, turns out it’s their national fruit and it’s sold everywhere. I can’t stomach it, but I heard it’s really healthy. However, many things are healthy so I chose to eat many other things 😉

  4. 1/ I played violin once upon a time as well! I’m more of a drum kit girl now!
2/ I had no idea how you felt about raw red onion and radishes!
3/ At least half of our answers would be the same if I did this.

  5. I guess we can get along even though Durians not your thing and you drink tap water (oh the horror IMO). As long as we’ve each got a dish of banana ice cream, we’re good.

  6. I didn’t know you had ibs! I’ve been dealing with it for a couple years, but I’ve been eating a lot more raw lately and a LOT less grains (especially gluten) and that along with physical therapy has seriously changed my day to day life. My symptoms have almost completely subsided, and I feel better in general. It’s cool what unprocessed, natural food can do for us.

    • So glad you feel better! I’m not gluten intolerant, but cutting back processed anything also helped to save me.

  7. Hooray for tap water. A friend just bought an expensive “alkaline water” bottle. I am not going to make an uneducated guess about its efficacy. All I know is the stuff that comes out of my tap tastes just fine.

Have you tried pumpkin seed butter? It’s my new favorite.

Had to look up meme AND skin brushing. You learn something or two everyday 🙂

  8. LOVE Woody Allen. Great movie pick.

Also: “What can you eat?” My friends seem to think I only eat lettuce when in fact I eat so much more than that (and am totally satisfied! Okay, I miss the idea of non-vegan pizza–‘idea’ being the operative word here). LOVE that question, haha.

Nice to learn more about you 🙂

  9. The ellipsis thing made me laugh because my husband is so guilty of that. All the emails that he sends have tons of them and it drives me crazy.

  10. Aww, Gena I love you! Your zoo comment made me laugh out loud. It’s not funny in reality. But today, it was. (;

  11. This is fun, Gena! I love learning things about other bloggers too. I think I did the first one a while back but the raw one is new to me!

  12. PS–I think that what Ricki’s asking is whether ‘the alphabet game’ tells you what blank to fill in for each letter of the alphabet, or if each person that does it picks their own blank to fill in for each letter– “A is for—“… I’m guessing that it’s the first of these, right?

  13. I’m totally behind the curve too–not even sure that it would make sense for me to do it, but I loved reading yours.

Right with you on the red onions. One of my new profs in the MFA program has a ‘grammar bitch’ t-shirt, and agreed that I should probably have one too!

    Hope you’re having a great w/e.

  14. Hi Gena!

    I love your blog!

You might want to fix the “Outstanding Miso Sesame Dressing” kale salad page you link to. Unless I am not reading it properly it appears that you’ve repeated the text/photographs several times.

Otherwise, all is well. Oh, and I’m another grammar nerd who appreciates your astute command of the English language. 🙂

    Keep up the good work!

  15. I did the ABCs of me a few months ago and people are always very interested in the U (underwear) one for some reason. Inquiring minds I guess!

“Nut butter: favorite kind? Almond butter. But sunflower seed butter is growing on me.”-
I like that SFSButter is growing on you. I love it!

And that you drink tap water. Me too.

And coffee is for SURE an ideal way to start the day 🙂

Fun raw version of the quiz; I hadn’t seen that til now.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  16. I don’t like bad grammar either. I know not everything that comes out of my mouth (or is typed by my hands) is grammatically correct, but I like to think that most of the time the things I say and write are properly worded. I have a habit of correcting people on their grammar, and I get flack for it all the time. Apparently, people don’t like to be corrected! Who knew?!

Oh, and raw onion = gag. I’m definitely with you on that! I always order salads sans onion.

  17. Ummm. . . stupid question, but if one were to do this meme, are the questions all the same? Or did you choose which one is “A,” “B,” “C,” etc.? (Okay, I *think* it’s obvious. . . but I’ve learned that nothing is obvious!).

Love your answers. Kale, kale, kale! I’m definitely with you on that one, and I agree that Woody Allen is the best source of quotes, ever. And of course we all learned at least one new thing! (Your mom’s name, for one). 😉 So much fun! I haven’t done one of these in ages and think I must, too (once I figure out the ABCs, of course). 😉

    • Ricki,

I have absolutely no clue what you’re asking, but that’s probably because I don’t actually know what a meme is.

So if you thought things weren’t obvious to you…

      🙂

      • “Meme” is one of my favorite words. It is easy to over-use, but a very powerful idea. Memes are units of belief, information, or behavior that are spread and evolve according to their cultural/social/scientific/etc fitness, just like genes fight to be spread and passed on. Sayings are memes. Religion is memetic. Medicine is memetic. The idea of memes is memetic. Raw foodism contains so many glowing examples of memes- detox, food combining, enzyme theories, etc. Banana soft-serve is possibly the best meme I know.
        OK, done! 😉
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memetics

        • Such a great definition, Laura.

Gena, feel out of the loop? I had to be taught what a meme was by my college freshmen! I teach first-year composition and they schooled me with this one (and laughed at me for weeks)! I won’t be clueless this semester. Ha!

      • In blogging, a meme is any repeated post like this one–that is passed around and lots of people do the same thing (like “Seven Favorite Blog Posts” or “100 Things About Me” or “ABC of Me.”). They used to be VERY popular when I started blogging (way back in 2008) and there were all kinds of repeated blog posts making the rounds (I even have an entire page on my blog called “All About Meme” filled with all the memes I participated in!). 😉
Okay, so let me try the question again: if I were to play along and do the ABC of Moi, do I answer the same questions that you did (ie, A is “preferred way to eat avocados”; B is “daily banana intake”; “C” is “cacao or carob?” –etc. OR, do I make up my own question starting with A, my own with B, etc through the alphabet? Hope that is a bit clearer. 😀
