CR joins Facebook! And, a Creamy Avocado Hemp Sauce

For the most part, I’m an “open book” kinda gal. There’s very little I won’t blurt out to the world—I suppose this makes me well suited to blogging—and seldom do I feel remorse for sharing something intimate. Every time I write about my family, though, I have a kneejerk moment of regret—did I share something too private? Did I betray anyone’s confidence? That’s certainly how I felt yesterday, after pressing “publish.” Moments later, my fears were assuaged: your awesome comments reminded me that I’m ashamed of nothing, and that personal experience is often the best entree into a great conversation.

In yesterday’s post, I also mentioned that this week might offer up nothing more than slapdash salads. I’m proud to say I managed something a little more complex than salad tonight: another spin on kelp noodles (for a little 411 on these guys, check out last week’s post). What I had on hand for sauce was either a) the last of a jar of hempseed butter, or b) avocado. After scratching my head in debate, I thought, why choose? I love avocado, I love hemp, but I’ve never married them in a recipe.

Clearly, I was overdo: this sauce is delicious, easy, and very nourishing. It’s vying with my red pepper hemp sauce as my favorite of the moment!

Creamy Avocado Hemp Sauce (yields 1 1/4 cups)

1/2 large avocado
2 tbsp hempseed butter
3/4 cup almond or rice milk
1-2 tbsp lemon juice
1/4-1/2 tsp salt (use your judgment)
Dash pepper

Blend all ingredients in a food processor or high speed blender till very smooth. Serve over pasta, salad, as a dip, or even as a sandwich spread.Yum!

I’m confident that this luscious, yet simple sauce would work really nicely with almond butter, cashew butter, or macadamia butter. Give it a try in as many varieties as you like!

It’s a dreamy, creamy pasta sauce:

And, along with a kale salad and some steamed butternut squash (not all of it goes into smoothies), it was a perfect dinner.

Before I hit the hay, an announcement! You guys may have noted that there’s a new icon next to my twitter and feedburner icons at the top right: facebook! CR has made one stride closer toward technological proficiency, and joined Facebook. The page isn’t done, and I don’t know how much time I’ll have to devote to it…but that’s what I said about Twitter, too. Hmmm.

None of this would have been possible without the help of my brother-in-law (Chloe’s husband), Knud. Knud is the founder of Knudr, a company that specializes in optimizing internet presences and creating and executing social media strategies for businesses and individuals. Knud shows his clients ways to attract new customers and generate more business from existing ones: this includes creating social media properties, claiming directory entries, and buying Facebook ads and Google AdWords. For someone like me, his services might simply amount to setting up a Facebook page!

Bloggers like to chat over the ether ad infinitum about how they increase their internet presence. I think it’s great: I’m all about running a biz-savvy blog, and of course I like to draw attention to my counseling practice, but I simply have so little time to devote to the endless duties of tweeting, buzzing, liking, sharing, and so on. I have two jobs! Facebook might be user friendly, but for someone with my schedule, even getting it set up feels like an insurmountable task.

That Knud was able to set up a Facebook presence for me instantly is a testament to his savvy, and it was clear from the start that he has a really nuanced understanding of what my blog is all about. This—understanding who his client is and what she wants—is no doubt what makes him good at what he does.

If any of you have small businesses you’d like to promote, or social media goals you’ve felt too daunted to achieve, I really encourage you to call upon Knudr for a little help. And to sweeten the deal, if you write to Knud at choosingraw@knudr.com, you’ll get a special Choosing Raw discount. It’s a great opportunity, so don’t wait!

In the meantime, guys, please, um, do whatever it is one does with facebook? Look me up, like me, friend me, and say hello 🙂 I’ll be operating my page like a pro soon: all with a little help from my friends.

  1. Go Knud!
I’ve never seen hempseed butter in the stores, and I haven’t seen those kelp noodles either! But it does look delicious and I will keep my eyes peeled for sure 🙂

  2. Yum kelp noodles we love those… and that sauce sounds like something we would love!!!

Yay for joining facebook… we set up a page for our blog though have not done too much with it. Maybe one day 😉

  3. Late commenter as always!!Your last post really got to me, you know I really HATE the smell of “carne asada” which, unfortunately, is one of Mexicans’ favorite dish. I hate all meat in general, but carne asada is specially prone to be the center of all day-time parties. My dad thinks Im nuts and we are always fighting because he thinks Im anorexic, just because I dont eat meat. I wish one day well be able to tak food without fighting!

    • Thats awful, but my dad does the same thing!
The first day he heard that i was vegan, he came into my room and said,
“Whew, I’m relieved! I thought you’d wasted away into nothing up here.”
And is constantly calling me things like his “psycho vegan” daughter.

It’s a pain but perhaps one day he will get it? 😉

  4. Glad you joined FB….I definitely have been a late-bloomer not only to social-networking, but also to technology in general (first computer at 27)…it’s always a process learning how to keep things from going awry!
My former all-raw roommate in Cali introduced me to kelp noodles, and I wish I could find them here! Loved the crunch.

  5. Congrats on the FB page, lady! I already became a fan! 🙂 Sauce sounds good, too bad kelp noodles gross me out. I had them once..ack. 🙂

  6. How funny! Last night, before I even read this post today, I silently wondered if you had a facebook page. After a quick search, there you were! I “became a fan” right away and then noticed you only had one or two posts and sort of wondered why. Come to find out today that it’s brand new! Welcome!

  7. I still haven’t gotten the hang of Twitter. I get how it works I just never think to myself, “that was interesting, I should tweet it!” I also don’t have a data plan on my phone, so I can only tweet from my computer, and how often does something interesting happen at my desk? Never.

Also, congrats on your Facebook page!

  8. there are not words to describe how amazing that sauce sounds! that’s something i will definitely be making for friends soon 🙂 and my mouth is kind of watering right now because of it…oops!

  9. quickie about the kelp noodles. i refuse to eat those shirataki noodles and i can’t digest grains very well so my go-to is usually zuke or spaghetti squash when i want ‘noodles’ i am working more sea veggies into my weekly routine a couple times (dulse on salad or a raw roll) but i’m curious about the texture of kelp. is it chewy or more like squash noodles? as long as they don’t smell terrible i think i may give these a try. i had no idea how amazing sea veggies were for nutrition!

  10. Everything looks delicious! I think I’m going to have to copy your butternut squash/kale salad this weekend. 🙂

  11. Hemp seed butter….did you make it or can you buy it? Sounds good!

I already like you but I “liked” you on Facebook, too. 🙂 One of the reasons I have a “blog FB page” is because somethings are interesting, but I don’t necessarily want to blog about them, so I post links, etc on my FB page because I think my followers might be interested. (by the way, I liked you as a person, JerriLynn, but my FB blog page is JL goes Vegan….if you’re interested in “liking” back http://www.facebook.com/pages/edit/?id=133453216688436&sk=basic#!/pages/JL-goes-Vegan-and-other-musings/133453216688436 )

  12. I love the combination of avocado and hemp seeds. I don’t get very fancy about it though…just spread the avocado on some whole grain toast and sprinkle with a T or so of hemp seeds–delish! So, can’t wait to try an actual recipe out with these two!

  13. I will be off to “fan” you, but needed to ask for your help.

I have a package of kelp noodles that have been in my fridge since Sunday and I’m SO scared to open them.

I don’t really dig shirataki. I don’t like sea vegetables or sea weed. I don’t even really like bean sprouts.

Please…I need a vote of confidence! I have pesto, marinara and legions of sauces, just no kelp confidence!

(I almost texted you to ask for encouragement…I know you will be unfriending me on FB shortly…)

  14. Hi Gena! I stumbled upon your blog while looking for a recipe for vegan cheese, and tried your vegan macadamia fermented goat cheese and i loved it! i mixed in some sundried tomatoes and thyme (dried cause it was the only one i had on hand). it was VERY yummy!! I’ve been vegetarian for 3 years and vegan since last december and I can use all the help i can get as far as recipe and good nutrition advice, so I LOVE your blog! It’s making also not shy away from healthy fats from nuts and avocado and similar food, because i feel it keeps me full and energized.
I saw you joined facebook and I just joined your facebook fans 🙂
Thanks for all your great recipes!
    Sally

  15. Guys like Knud are invaluable for people with real lives, real jobs, and who arent exactly making a million bucks with their blogging “job”. I mean “hobby”. That feels like a job and can turn into one, quickly, if we let it!

Off to join your FB page next…

The hemp sauce looks awesome! And it looks very “Gena”. Just something about the flavors of it totally speak YOU. All the way!

    Looks awesome!

Being an open book on the blog? Yeah, I kinda resemble that comment too 🙂

Have a great nite…my god, it’s late there, you need to get your zzz’s!!

    🙂

  16. That looks delicious! I have never heard for hempseed butter. I will be on the lookout, so that I can make this! =)
