Product Review! Brad’s Raw Chips

Yesterday, when I shared my recipe for raw “tuna salad,” you may have noticed some chips in my snack plate:

They’re over on the right.

These delicious treats were a gift from the kind folks at Brad’s Raw Chips, who agreed to send me some of their flavors to sample. Thank you, Brad & Co.!

When I first spotted these chips online, they seemed to look a whole lot like the juice pulp crackers I make at home. I love those guys, but the thing is, my schedule hasn’t allowed me to juice consistently for months now (it’s pretty much a weekends only treat), and with the lack of juicing comes a lack of juice pulp with which to make crackers, falafel, etc. Brad’s Chips seem to be made just like my juice pulp crackers are made: veggies, flaxseed, salt, pepper — simple! (Brad adds some buckwheat flour).  And Brad himself has a very inspiring story, from SAD diet to raw. You can imagine how excited I was to get these guys in the mail!

I got the kale, Indian, and red pepper flavors (the ones I wanted to try most). I dug into the kale flavor first (duh):

…and it was love at first bite. They’re not too salty, not too spicy, but not bland, either. I’ll admit it: my own pulp crackers are decidedly bland. I need to take a cue from Brad! Here they are, with some hummus:

Next up came the red pepper flavor, which is what I served with my “tuna” salad:

…and with a batch of my Middle Eastern cauliflower “rice”:

Finally, I tasted the Indian flavor (which I didn’t catch any photos of — sorry guys!). Of the three, it was my least favorite, but it would be many peoples’ most favorite. It’s very flavorful and quite spicy, and since I’m quite sensitive to heat, it was more than I could handle. But it would be right up a lot of other alleys.

If I had to rank my favorites, I’d say it was 1) kale, 2) red pepper, 3) Indian, but in truth, all of these chips are great. And the nutritional stats are very healthy, too! Check them out:

Plant-based nutrition on the go! They’re great snacks, especially if you’re craving savory foods more than sweet, and they’re obviously wonderful for dips and for sprinkling over salads. They’re light, too; Lydia’s crackers are favorites of mine, but I’ll confess that they sometimes feel a little too dense to be rightly called crackers–they’re more like raw flatbreads! These guys truly are chips/crackers: they can be a part of a big meal, or they can be a little snack.

I highly recommend all of these products. Brad’s a fellow who seems worthy of support, and I’d personally love to see his business grow. If you’re short on kitchen time and have been thinking of investing in a raw cracker or chip as a shortcut, check these guys out — you’ll be so glad you did.

  1. I was surprised to find garlic in the ingredients lists for these crackers! I know you are not exactly an allium aficionado (and nor am I)! I often find raw products (crackers/dressings) with garlic are too potent for my palate (and belly).

Was the garlic not noticeable? Or was it’s presence known and you enjoyed it?

    • * its presence

P.S. The raw crackers I’ve tried with garlic were made by
Two Moms in the Raw & Foods Alive. I don’t care for the texture of these traditional whole flaxseed crackers, try as I migh – a hard-to-chew, gummy, seedy mess in my mouth makes for poor munching and digestive experiences. But lots of folks love ’em. Different strokes for different folks. (-:

      I definitely second the fancy for Lydia’s. The flavor and texture is great, but it would be nice if they were a bit narrower and more cracker-like. Ah well, I’ll chow on them regardless. (-;

  2. i tried the sundried tomato kind and it is aweful. i’ve had it for about a month now, if not longer. that is a long time to have a tiny bag of chips. i am trying to crumble it up and put it on salads, that way the bad taste goes away. i agree with you about brad though. he seems so nice (LOVED reading his story on the back of the bag– and i’m from Pennsylvania too!) and i want to see the brand grow as well, so i am looking forward to trying to kale chips even though the sun dried tomato were not up my alley. i hope they are better!

by the way, did you see that the Pump Energy Food posted your blog on their website? i think that is fantastic! congratulations 🙂

  3. Great company and yummy chips! I always pick them up when I see them. My favorite are the red pepper! Nom nom nom!

  4. One of my friends brought them to a raw food meeting we had and I really liked how light they are. I don’t usually eat many raw crackers because they are so heavy or dry, but these were a nice light bite size snack!

  5. These chips looked awesome…..until I saw the sodium. Holy jeez!!! It’s almost a 3:1 ratio to the calories.

    • Brooke,

Actually, something is weird here. Those facts don’t at all match the sodium facts on the packaging of the chips itself. (I just copied from the site without questioning.) Perhaps the recipe has changed over time? In any case, my cases at home had sodium in the 100’s range.

  6. I just ordered 3 bags. I agree Lydia’s crackers are too dense. But I love love love the Quackers from One Lucky Duck, and Brad’s seem similarly munchable and are more in my price range.

  7. I LOVE chips and crispy snacks of any kind so I bet I’d be a huge fan of these. Anything that I can use to shovel more dip into my mouth the better! Great review, Gena!

  8. So glad to see these on your blog! Brad is a local product to me, and when a Whole Foods opened up earlier this year he was there sampling often, so I think I’ve tried almost all of the flavors! I loved them all. I have yet to actually buy my own though, so thanks for the reminder!

  9. interested what has your breakfasts been since you haven’t had time for choosing during the week? i know that was one of your number one choices, and not a fruit fan so would love to hear what you have been doing?

    • Ilana,

I post about my breakfasts all the time! Search for my “green eggs and hmmm” post, and see my recent post on dried buckwheat for ideas.

  10. I’m adding these to my already long list of foods i’m going to buy when we visit! Customs are going to have a field day with me on the way back to the UK! x

  11. I have tried the Cheddar and the Kale varieties of Brads. To me, and you know this…I am uber garlic and onion sensitive as well as sodium…the kale has too much garlic and the cheddar has too much something..maybe garlic, or salt? Not sure. Anyway I do like them but since I can taste the garlic on myself for like 24 hrs, I just make my own kale chips. Scott and Skylar really like them, so it’s just my thing 🙂

And yes, most commercial-grade raw/vegan food has FAR MORE seasonings and such than we would put in ours. You said your chips/breads were “bland”. Well, then I guess mine would be too b/c I hate garlic, onions, salt, curry, strong spices and me are not friends. Just not my thing. But sugar me up baby..you know I have a sweet tooth 🙂

  12. YUM those look and sound so good!! Would definitely be perfect with hummus, like you did… a remix on the classic chip and dip 🙂 I think I would really like the spicy flavors but I want to try kale too.

    • Heather–

I’ve never seen them in stores, so for now, I’d check out Brad’s website. They’re pricey but worth it.

  13. Brad is from my area, so I spend $7 on his chips quite frequently. They are tasty, fiber-rich and they have a neat closey top! I stick the bag in my car and always have them there for when I’m hungry, running from job to job. So good. Altho our tastebuds must be complete opposites! Indian #1, Kale being the least fave. Glad you enjoyed them though! 🙂

  14. wow, those look like a great product! I have been literally dreaming about your salads lately, clearly I have been eating out too much! I need to get to the grocery store.

  15. I just took a look at Brad’s site and think the Indian flavor looks pretty fabulous. I love that they are gluten-free.

I have to admit that $6.99 is a bit pricey but if I could find them near me I might splurge!

  16. I just saw these the other day at a local food store- Brad is from the Philadelphia area! The look great, especially with that tuna salad. The only raw crackers I’ve ever had are Mary’s, so I’d really like to try more!
