Putting My Best Food Forward: Sharing Veganism Through Enthusiasm on Our Hen House

IMG_5053

Howdy, all! Happy you liked the rosemary crackers.

The last time I contribute a thought for food column to the Our Hen House website, it was about eating disorder recovery, veganism, and the way they intersect in my life (a familiar topic here on CR). This time I’m writing about something less somber, but no less personal: the ways in which I share my vegan lifestyle with others. In particular, the way I share it with my post-bacc friends.

I began my post-bacc as many post-baccs do: intent on knocking out my prerequisites and moving on to the med school application process as quickly as humanly possible. I had no intention of making friends; I was interested in getting a job done, and that was it.

I may not have been looking for friends, but friends found me, and I’m so glad they did. My post-bacc friends have enriched my life so much, and they’ve also helped to coach me through what was a very rigorous and challenging academic experience. I’ve done my best to repay them in affection and care, but I’ve also shared a lot of food with them. And it’s the impact of this sharing–this culinary activism–that I’m chatting about on Our Hen House today. I hope you’ll enjoy the column, as well as my recipe for raw, vegan apricot almond bars. They’re one of my favorite homemade snacks, and they’re easy to assemble!

Head over to OHH for the column. Tomorrow, chia pudding!

  1. I’m a bit new to raw and vegan cooking. My question is that I have almond meal from a previous recipe I did. Can I use this or is it ground to fine to put in these almond bars?

  2. Hi Gena

I’ve been reading your blog for a while after finding it I think through Angela Liddon’s Oh She Glows. I love to read your articulate posts and your simple but yummy looking recipes – long time reader, first time commenter! I’m in the UK and there’s a radio programme coming up that you might be interested in. BBC Radio 4 is the kind of ‘highbrow’ radio station here and is mostly spoken word (documentaries, news programmes, plays etc) and they have a weekly Food Programme which has been going for years and each week puts some aspect of food under the spotlight. It’s usually pretty articulate and intelligent stuff. This sunday it is going to be ‘a new generation of veganism’ and I’ll certainly be having a listen, either on the day or through iplayer, which is a service where you can listen to (or watch if it’s tv) programmes after they’ve been aired. I don’t know if this is available in America but here’s the link in case you wanted to have a look.

    Keep up the amazing posts

  3. Super article Gena. It’s great that you’ve been able to plant little (and big) seeds of change in your classmates and show veganism in such a positive light. I’m starting a Master’s program in September and will remember this post and try and follow suit 🙂 Food is probably my best method of activism too!
P.S. Your energy bars look delicious

  5. Enthusiasm wins every time. People shouldn’t have veganism shoved in their faces, they should see someone they respect and wonder why they are so happy and healthy! When I want to inspire a friend I send links to your recipes all the time without telling them they are vegan. I’d rather someone appreciate the creativity and deliciousness before they realize no animal products are used.

  6. The article is amazing Gena, you are such a wonderful person and such an inspiration and remind me why I wish I could do more and better!

  7. I really liked this article, Gena! I agree that sharing delicious food is a great way to introduce people to veganism. I am a very articulate person (or at least I think I am), but when people find out that I’m vegan and ask why, sometimes I just blank. Then, I offer them some irresistible vegan fare, and I have no more questions. For example, I made my dad a blackberry cobbler from fresh blackberries that we picked together at a local farm, and, to my enthusiasm, he loved it!
