Weekend Reading | The Full Helping

Here we are, in the final days of 2014. It has been quite a year, and I look forward to sharing some reflections with you all later this week. For now, some weekend reading, brought to you while Steven and I dance into the wee hours at my friend Gabi’s wedding. Enjoy!

This cauliflower and avocado salad with pomegranate seeds is so gorgeously simple, yet colorful, and I imagine that the texture is fantastic, too.

Speaking of gorgeous salads, this beet, walnut, and celery salad sure is easy on the eyes.

Reads

1. A cool article about how an older medical technology–massive blood transfusion–can be used to save womens’ lives following childbirth.

2. A sad, complicated article about situations where the wish to die is denied to those who are terminally ill. No easy conclusions here.

3. Doctors are now writing exercise prescriptions. Though of course the encouragement of exercise is only one part of a big picture when it comes to health, at least this is an advance for preventive medicine.

4. A very cool story about storybook archetypes, how and why they work, and what makes them stand the test of time.

5. I had no idea that much harm is being done to bees in the quest to investigate their population decline. An interesting examination of the research that’s in progress, and whether there’s another way.

Happy Sunday, friends!

Happy Sunday! It’s been a brisk few days here in New York, and I’m relishing the autumnal weather (even though work kept me indoors for most of the weekend). For the next two weekend readings, I’m all about vegan Thanksgiving. Here we go: Start your meal off with this hearty chanterelle mushroom and kale salad with lime tahini sauce. SO much flavor and texture in here! This poblano cornbread stuffing will make a fantastic accompaniment, and it’s even hearty enough to be a…

Happy Sunday, friends. It’s been…a week. Nothing insurmountable, just a pile-up of a lot of things at once. They all had one thing in common, which is that they were largely outside of my control. It started last weekend. A relationship that I’d actually been hopeful about (the first in a long time), came apart. Its unraveling felt as sad and mysterious as its beginning had felt bright and surprising. I guess it’s a mark of some sort of progress that I understood all…

I’ve been reading a lot about authenticity lately. I guess this is self-selecting, as it’s a topic that interests me and tends to permeate the spaces I spend time in (yoga studios, blogs that focus on health and self-care, therapy). But authenticity seems to be having something of a moment, too—or so book titles and articles would suggest. For the holidays, my mom gifted me with a copy of Baron Baptiste’s new book, Perfectly Imperfect. I was touched that she thought of it,…

On Friday, I was honored to be a part of a conversation titled “Hot Topics in Eating Disorder Treatment,” hosted by Castlewood Treatment Centers and Balanced Eating Disorder Treatment Center here in New York City. The workshop’s moderators were Tammy Beasley and Melainie Rogers, both registered dietitians who specialize in ED treatment. One of the topics under discussion was whether or not vegans can and should be treated in high-level, in-patient care. Tammy and Melainie invited me to share about my own recovery…
